Listen to a piano sketch In the summer of 2008 the Hotel Mar Alto in Cascais needed music for its terrace on Thursday nights, and Tessa needed a reason to play outdoors. She called four friends from the Lisbon jazz cafes, and the five of them played every Thursday from June to September, with the sea behind them and the waiters dancing between the tables. By the end of the summer the regulars were calling them The Esplanade Five. Salt Air was recorded the following spring in the hotel's old ballroom, in one weekend, with the windows open. You can hear the gulls on two tracks, and on the last one the hotel cat. "The best Thursday in Cascais, ten summers running. Bring a jumper, the wind comes up after the second set." In September 2015 the Hotel Mar Alto closed for a long renovation, and we played its terrace one last time. We recorded that night from the bar with two microphones and a lot of luck.
