Page 6A The Daily Sentinel Wednesday April 12 1995 Sports zrj1 1 Jik kafl JfiaBi' fc 1 Contributed photo Pitching power Scottsboro Lady Wildcats pitcher Kristy Miller pitches against Albertville in Monday softball action Miller and her teammates defeated Albertville 12 2 Lady Wildcats rip Albertville By JOHN SOUTHERLAND Sports Editor The Scottsboro Lady Wildcats got their offense cranked into high gear Monday night as they soundly defeated area rival Albertville 12 2 The contest was tied 1 1 after two innings of play but the Lady Wildcats took a 4 2 lead after three innings Brooke Gogan had an RBI sin gle while Heather Wilkerson had a two run double In the fourth inning Kim Utech hit a one run home run to lead off the inning Shortly thereafter Gogan hit a two run blast to put the con test away for Scottsboro In the ninth inning with Scottsboro holding a 12 2 lead Kristy Miller scored and Gogan added two more RBIs to give Scottsboro the win Scottsboro 12 Guntersville 8 The Lady Wildcats defeated Guntersville last week behind two Scottsboro home runs one each by Laura Robertson and Heather Wilkerson This week the Lady Wildcats are in action Thursday at Austin Vikings defeat Ider By JOHN SOUTHERLAND Sports Editor This was supposed to be a rebuilding season for the Skyline Vikings Throw in the fact that a new coach took the helm of a team laden with underclassmen and it is easy to see how those dire predictions could come true However someone forgot to tell that to Vikings Coach Randy Money as his club improved their season record to 15 7 after defeating Ider 7 6 recently Skyline pitcher Chris Wade who is only a ninth grader came in relief of starter Jeremy Bullock to earn the win Wade has already pitched two no hit ters this season Ider jumped out to a big lead early as they scored four runs in the first inning for a 4 0 lead Skyline get its first hit until the fourth inning and score its first run until the fifth inning However from that point on the Vikings outscored Ider 7 1 to claim the 7 6 victory Michael ox was walked to start the rally for Skyline ox then stole his eighth base of the season Scott Jarman score ox from second with a single Jarman stole second and third and Bullock was then hit with a pitch He then stole sec ond base Lonnie Joe Bellamy then knocked both baserunners in to begin the Skyline scoring spree The Vikings then put the game away in the seventh inning as they scored four runs on four hits with three stolen bases Skyline 5 Woodville 2 The Vikings and Panthers split a doubleheader last week end with Woodville winning the first game 13 3 and Skyline taking the second con test 5 2 Standout Skyline pitcher Chris Wade pitched a complete game against Woodville giv ing up only six hits while strik ing out Ilin the Skyline victo ry Jeremy Campbell hit a solo home run for the Panthers in the third inning is much improved over last Woodville Coach Andy Cooper said have showed tremen dous improvement and that is a tribute to Coach has really been doing a fine job for Skyline They have got a lot of enthusiasm going and they are a young team that will be someone to contend Cooper said The Woodville coach also had high praises for the Skyline pitcher is a very good he said he is only in ninth Skyllne lder box score RUNS HITS ERRORS SKYUtyJs IDER 6' Scottsboro baseball explodes By JOHN SOUTHERLAND Sports Editor To say the Scottsboro Wildcats varsity baseball team has been on a tear lately may be somewhat of an understate ment It may be more correct to say they have been on fire How else can you describe a three game series last weekend in which Scottsboro scored 45 runs and allowed only six? playing pretty well right Wildcats Coach Stan Gibby said been real pleased with the COOPER runs in the inning In the third inning the Wildcats blew the game open as they scored seven runs for Scottsboro 16 16 Buckhorn 5 5 Scottsboro blasted Buckhorn in a doubleheader Saturday outscoring the home stand ing Bucks 32 10 to raise their season record to 16 4 In the first contest Scottsboro jumped on the board first scoring three top of the first I an 11 0 lead Buckhorn scored four in the third and added one in the fifth but it nearly enough as the Wildcats added six more runs for the victory Jamie Cooper was the win ning pitcher going four innings on the mound Matt Brewer relieved Cooper and struck out three in the final two innings with out allowing a hit Heath Zapf excelled at the plate for Scottsboro going four for four from the plate includ ing a three run home run in the first inning and three doubles for a total of five RBIs in the game Justin Watwood John Hardman Jeremy Luse and Brewer each had hits for the Wildcats Scottsboro scored their 16 runs on 12 hits and had no BREWER R3 EVANS LUSE time exerting they tacked 10 errors in the field Buckhorn had five runs on eight hits but picked up seven errors In game two the Wildcats waisted little themselves as runs on the board in the first inning Buckhorn responded with one run in each of the first two innings to trail 10 2 Scottsboro then added six more runs in the third inning compared to three for Buckhorn to claim the win Marlon Evans pitched a complete game allow ing eight hits and five runs while striking out seven bat ters or the season Evans has compiled a 4 0 record on the mound Brewer went three for three in the second game and had two RBIs 57 Zapf con tinued his hot streak at the plate going two for three with a double and three RBIs Cooper went two for three from the plate with two THqMAS doubles Michael Berrong was two for three from the plate with one RBI Scottsboro had 14 hits and three errors while Buckhorn had eight hits and five errors in the second of two games Scottsboro 13 North Jackson 0 In a key area game last riday night the Wildcats shut out North Jackson 13 0 as Jeremy Luse pitched a two hit shutout to raise his season record to 4 0 on the mound Luse also had nine strike outs Colton Thomas starred at the plate for Scottsboro going two for three with one RBI and three runs scored Thomas also had three stolen bases in the contest John Hardman was two for three with three RBIs for the Wildcats Panthers looking to get hot at By JOHN SOUTHERLAND Sports Editor Aft The Woodville Panthers hoping to qualify for the sec tional tournament are looking to get hot at the right time Woodville Coach Andy Cooper said trying to get on a roll right Cooper said The Panthers have won two of their last three contests including a key area contest at Valley Head Monday afternoon Woodville 9 Valley Head 1 The Panthers scored early and often in dispensing of area rival Valley Head Monday afternoon The Panthers scored two runs in the first inning one each in the second third and fifth innings and three more in the sixth inning to take an 8 0 lead into the seventh inning Both teams added one run in the final inning to provide the final score Jason Potts upped his record to 3 2 on the mound after pitch ing a complete game and strik ing out 17 batters in the shutout Potts only allowed four hits in the contest all singles Jeremy Campbell was three for four at the plate with one right time RBI Potts was effective at" the plate as well as on the mound" going two for three with an RBI Curtis Stewart was one for two at the plate with two RBIs for Woodville and teammate Jason Clark was one for three also with two RBIs for the Panthers who upped their record to 6 5 on the season including a 2 2 area record Woodville 13 Skyline 3 The Panthers and the Vikings squared off in a doubleheader this past weekend with Woodville winning the first game 13 3 and Skyline win ning the second contest 5 2 In the first game the Panthers only had four hits against their county rivals but it was exercising good judg ment at the plate that was the difference Cooper said had 12 walks which was the key to the win for he said gave us 16 baserunners instead of Jeremy Campbell was the winning pitcher giving up two hits while pitching a complete game and striking out five Preston was one for two from the plate Stewart was one" for three Campbell was one for two and Clark was one for three to lead the Panthers 1 Baa iW I i 1 Irwf 1 's A MN aa 1 Jr Mfr CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Mess of catfish Don Webb and Heath Robertson of Scottsboro show off a whole mess of catfish they caught on a private pond in Skyline recently The string of fish weighed about 50 pounds Call The Daily Sentinel at 259 1020 to report baseball and soft ball scores for your favorite teams win lose DREW (HfcW as 3 I 1 1 1 1 1 A mN aa 1 Jr mb wf Sr MMjk 7.
