This complication, known as "vascular occlusion," can lead to skin loss, blindness, and even stroke if left untreated.
Dr. Rosa Sigrist, a lead researcher from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, and her team studied 100 cases of filler-related vascular complications across multiple centers. Their findings revealed that in nearly half of the cases, ultrasound scans showed a lack of blood flow to small facial vessels, and in a third of cases, major blood vessels were affected.
But here's where it gets controversial: Dr. Sigrist believes that using ultrasound to guide filler injections can help avoid these complications altogether. She advises clinics to utilize ultrasound planning to ensure the filler is not injected into or near blood vessels.
