The Wichita Eagle from Wichita, Kansas (2024)

K34 4E THE WICHITA EAGLE-BEA CON Sunday, June 7, 1987 John Dunn Remained Devoted To People of Hometown Plains By Adam Rome Staff Writer John "Darby" Dunn put stock in Plains. He ran a family grocery there for 25 years, and served as city treasurer even longer. Later, he represented the city's older people in the Silver-Haired Legislature in Topeka, and he kept the books for the Senior Center. Mr. Dunn was born in Plains, and he died there on Friday, at 71, of a heart attack.

He didn't let go of Plains even when he worked in Wichita. He'd live part of the week in a rented place in the big city, and come home on weekends. And the people in town loved him, said his wife, Irene. "He had an awful lot of friends. He enjoyed people and people enjoyed him," she said.

Mr. Dunn left Plains to go to Ft. Hays State University, and worked for several years in Manhattan and the Kansas City area. In 1945, when his father died, he returned to run the family grocery store. And soon, he had Dunn stores in Liberal and Sublette, too.

He ran things "the old-fashioned way," his wife said, by "catering to his customers." And he was always around: He did butchery, stocked shelves, carried bags out to cars. Hindered by illness, Mr. Dunn sold his stores about 15 years ago, and took a job as a meat inspector with Deaths and Services ARKANSAS CITY Glenn L.
